“Through the Lens: An Exploration of Landscape, Architecture and Emotion” | Kids Out and About Rochester

“Through the Lens: An Exploration of Landscape, Architecture and Emotion”

Through the Lens: An Exploration of Landscape, Architecture and Emotion” featuring Nicholas Jospe opens this month at Image City Photography Gallery, offering a bold and evocative look at landscapes shaped—and scarred—by time, culture, and human touch. From the misty rice terraces of China to the skeletal remains of American barns, Jospe’s photographs do more than document; they provoke reflection on the beauty of impermanence and the tension between nature and control.

This exhibit spans six photographic series that traverse continents and eras:

  • The Longsheng Rice Terraces: Spring-flooded fields shimmer like mirrors in rural China, blurring the lines between natural splendor and human design.

  • The Dolomites: These jagged Italian peaks, shaped by wind and time, become a visceral study in drama, resilience, and isolation.

  • Matera: In this ancient Italian city carved from stone, Jospe captures the uneasy coexistence of a subterranean past with modern reinvention.

  • The Fate of Barns: In our own rural landscape, Jospe documents collapsing barns as symbols of forgotten industry and changing values.

  • On Trees and Vines: Twisted, interwoven growths evoke intimacy and struggle—living metaphors of connection and resistance.

  • Bianchi and the Color Celeste: A study in iconography and place, these photos explore the cultural weight of a single, unforgettable color.

Who: Nicholas Jospe is a photographer who isn’t afraid to push boundaries. With a portfolio that spans dramatic landscapes, decaying architecture, and intimate natural forms, Jospe’s work challenges the viewer to look beyond the surface and consider the deeper stories of time, change, and human impact. His photographs are as much about the questions they raise as the answers they may never provide.

In Addition:  Don Burkel is exhibiting in the Neuberger Gallery. Steve Dent will display in his second of three shows as Visiting Artist. Guest Photographers include Clay Arnold, Michael Barnard, Boris Keller, and Tom Kredo. Select photographs will be exhibited by Camera Rochester Photographers Jason Abel, Archie Curry, Deanna David, and Anne Ryan. Galley Partners are Dick Bennett, Marie Costanza, Steve Levinson, Nicholas Jospe, Gil Maker, Don Menges, Luann Pero, and Sheridan Vincent.
